We all set out to find our place in nature for different reasons. Each and every individual enjoys time outside in their own way, and many of us find a deeper connection to nature through fishing.
But what is it about fishing that gets us out the door and in the water? What about it calls us back time and time again?
Personally, I love chasing fish in the mountains. While I admire the beauty and character of a little wild trout, there’s something more to fishing than just catching them. I love being in the mountains. I love the crisp alpine air filled with the scent of evergreens, dirt, and granite. I love the quiet and the solitude I find when fishing a small mountain stream. It’s there that my mind finds peace.
Tenkara has been the catalyst for many adventures, and has taken me to places I would have never considered going if it weren’t for my pursuit of fish. Along the way, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and fish with some great people. Many of those people I have formed friendships with.

So exactly what is it that we fish for? Some would say it’s the fish, and to a certain degree, it is. But there’s more to it. Aside from the fish we chase, it’s the experience that comes with it. The experience is what keeps us coming back for more. It’s the places tenkara can take us, and the connection to nature and friends that fishing offers. Through these experiences, we make lasting memories - whether it’s with friends, or just by ourselves.
I think it’s important to say that fishing should be fun, and that you should enjoy your time in nature and on the water. As long as you’re being respectful of nature and others, you should fish in a way that brings you joy and happiness, without having to fit standards that someone else has imposed upon themselves.
Get out there! Find your place in the outdoors! Explore new stretches of water, and appreciate the ones that you frequent! Enjoy your time in nature how you like!
