A year ago today, we launched our website - Heritage Tenkara Project
Our goal was to create a free resource to encourage inclusivity and growth within the angling community. We wanted to build something that anglers of all skill levels and backgrounds could benefit from, in hopes that everyone could find further enjoyment of their time outside through fishing, and through tenkara. With that said, we couldn't do this without an awesome community, and the support from anglers within it. Before we get too far into this little update, we want to say thank you to those who make this community great, and to our contributors and our readers - this project wouldn’t be the same without each and every one of you!
The big focus over the last year has been on the website, and providing articles written by ourselves (Amanda and Martin), as well as guest writers. There are many different aspects to fishing, and we wanted to be able to share different perspectives from those who are passionate about their practice of fixed-line fishing, and knowledgeable in those different aspects. We’re truly honored to know some great people in the community, and to be able to connect with others as the project grows.
Outside of articles, Amanda has had some great opportunities to get out and talk with others, as well as do a few presentations regarding tenkara. From Europe and back to the White Mountains Tenkara Camp Out, she has been the “boots on the ground,” and the one who is out spreading the word of tenkara. We are starting to see how in-person events could really benefit the community, and are looking to expand on that idea. We are exploring different possibilities at this time, and are hoping to have something new to offer soon!
In the meantime, we wanted to share some of our highlights from over the year!
Our Most Popular Articles
Amanda writes about how she goes about finding new waters to fish when traveling and exploring new areas.
This post covers a multitude of casting lines used in tenkara, and even goes on to list some pros and cons of the different line types and materials.
Our first article we shared on the site! We wanted to talk about what characteristics someone just starting out should look for in a rod when getting started, as well as a few suggestions that we find to be a good cross between quality and price.
Articles from Guest Writers
Kathleen wrote a nice little piece on bridging the gap between fly fishing with a rod and reel, and fishing with a tenkara rod, and talks about some techniques that translate well between the two.
In this post, Nate covers his experiences of getting his daughter, Natty (who is an accomplished angler), out in nature and fishing with a tenkara rod.
Catch & Release, Catch & Eat, and Stewardship Series
Kaz put together a great series that shares good fish handling practices, traditional Japanese ways of preparing different sized fish, and conservation of our streams and natural resources. This three part series offers plenty of history and parallels with more modern topics that we see as anglers today.
With having hit the one-year mark, we're excited to see what the future holds for Heritage, and where the different paths will lead us!
